	In a world where humans live underground because of beastmen living on the surface, a young boy named Simon spends his days drilling holes and helping expand his village. His best buddy Kamina has dreams of escaping this subterranean world and exploring the surface, having seen it himself long before. Simon discovers a strange glowing key alongside a robot while drilling one day, which Kamina christens as "~~Gurren~~". Just then, a bigger robot crashes through the ceiling of the village being fought by a girl with a sniper rifle. Using the drill to power ~~Gurren~~ and defeat the robot, Simon, Kamina, and the girl Yoko soon embark on a journey to free the surface world from the clutches of the beastmen.
