Full Metal Panic! is a light novel series that has been adopted into multiple forms of media such as anime and manga. The TV series only covers a very small portion of the actual novel. The series takes place in an alternate modern reality in which the Cold War era has yet to end and military tension is high worldwide.

Story

In a world where the Cold War still exists, and every nation is closely observing each other's activities, a neutral force known as Mithril acts as a military mediator to prevent the rise of what could possibly be World War III. With their technological superiority over even world powers such as the United States and the Soviet Union, Mithril is a mercenary force to be reckoned with. With the world's superpowers still at a stalemate, Mithril has turned their attention to terrorist activities. Sousuke Sagara, a mercenary soldier and arm slave pilot of Mithril's Special Response Team, has been assigned on a new mission: to watch over and protect a high school girl named Kaname Chidori. What seems to be a trivial mission will put Sousuke and his comrades in over their heads.
