In the NES version, some secret characters will only be available for a few stages, and then leave. They are: Lalah (leaves on Stage 7), Kochou Oni (leaves on Stage 8) and Four (leaves on Stage 13, returns on Stage 21). I don't know if they stay with your group in the CB version, but I remember reading somewhere that Lalah does, so probably they all do.
