Amuro Ray (アムロ・レイ Amuro Rei) is the main protagonist of Mobile Suit Gundam and Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack. Originally an antisocial teenager, the events from Mobile Suit Gundam force him to become the Gundam's pilot and he becomes a pivotal figure in the events during the early Universal Century timeline in the Gundam franchise.
Biography
Mobile Suit Gundam
The son of Kamaria Ray and the Gundam's designer, Tem Ray, Amuro is an alienated, antisocial young man who identifies better with machines than he does with people. He initially lived on Earth in Canada until he moves with his father to Side 7, where his father did work developing the Gundam. During the attack on Side 7 he climbs into the Gundam's cockpit to save it from being stolen or destroyed. He finds himself reluctantly serving as the White Base's main line of defense as the Gundam's designated pilot as there were no other suitable or trained pilots. Through all of Amuro's development, he then begins to lose many people he had cherished, most importantly Lalah Sune, the only person he could telepathically communicate with. At the end of the war, Amuro, with his Gundam destroyed, realizes that the crew of the White Base is the family he belongs to and reunites with the surviving members as they flee the destruction of A Bao A Qu.
Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam
Pilot of the original Gundam during the One Year War, the Earth Federation now places him under house arrest since he is seen as a threat. Amuro during this time has gone into semi-retirement in order to deal with his post-traumatic stress disorder. Through his guilt over accidentally killing Lalah, Amuro also has a fear of going into outer space, as told by Mirai Noa. However, Fraw Bow and Katz Kobayashi manage to re-ignite his fighting spirit to help the crew of the Argama during their time on Earth. After joining Karaba (AEUG's earth-bound ally), Amuro became a key figure within the group, leading several crucial missions, including the attack on the Titan's base in Mount Kilimanjaro and the seizing of Federation's Congress Building in Dakar. After the operation in Dakar, and the AEUG's return to space, Karaba receives their new shipment of mass produced Zeta Gundams, the MSZ-006A1 Zeta Plus A1's to enhance their fighting strength. Amuro was given a Zeta Plus in his custom colors and was made commander of the 18th Tactical Fighter Aggressor Squadron (18TFAS) as part of the Karaba Air Force, and would be of great use in fighting both the remaining Titans on Earth, and the newly emerged Neo-Zeon.
Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam: A New Translation
In this retelling of the events in Zeta Gundam, Amuro is the same in terms of character . However, the events of the the A.E.U.G. and Karaba joint attacks on Mt. Kilimanjaro and Dakar do not occur and Amuro makes an early exit from the movie series once he assists Kamille with getting back to space.
Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack
After the First Neo-Zeon War, Amuro joins the Earth Federation's Londo Bell group led by Bright Noa, and served as the combat squad commander. During the Second Neo-Zeon War, Amuro is assigned to the battleship Ra Cailum, Londo Bell's flagship, as the leader of the ship's mobile suit squads. Amuro initially pilots the RGZ-91 Re-GZ, but Anaheim Electronics soon delivers to him the RX-93 Nu Gundam, a highly advanced mobile suit largely designed by Amuro himself. It is widely believed that his relatively low status in the Earth Federation is a sign of the government's continued mistrust in Newtypes.
At the end of the Second Neo-Zeon War, after defeating Char's MSN-04 Sazabi in the duel and capturing Char's escape pod, Amuro attempted to singlehandedly stop the asteroid Axis from colliding with the Earth by pushing the asteroid with his Nu Gundam. His action inspired other mobile suit pilots to join in, even Neo-Zeon soldiers. Although he eventually succeeded, the act overloaded Nu Gundam's psychoframe construct. Both he and Char disappeared in a magnificent aurora, thus ending his long-time legacy of combat since the One Year War and concluding the most famous Mobile Suit Gundam rivalry at last.
Personality
In Mobile Suit Gundam Amuro is initially a very antisocial teenager. Besides Frau Bow, he does not really communicate with anyone on a frequent basis. This causes him to become extremely prone to become misunderstood by others and for him to misunderstand the good intentions of his shipmates after he boards the White Base. Despite this, he has great technical skill as a mechanic and pilot. After the Odessa Operation, his Newtype abilities have evolved and become more apparent, allowing him to open up to the crew members that he previously had problems being around and eventually Lalah. Her death and Sayla's distrust of Char causes him to always be weary of his intentions in future encounters between the two. By the end of the series, his close bond with the members of the White Base allow them to reunite and flee during the chaos of A Baoa Qu.
In Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam Amuro has greatly matured, although he has developed a lack of confidence due to the death of Lalah and his state of being under house arrest. He is led to believe that he cannot make an impact in current military affairs and fears going into space, haunted by Lalah's spirit. He also has difficulty maintaining romantic relationships due to his memories of Lalah, which cause him to suddenly become cold towards other women. His distrust for Char makes him hand his own pistol to Katz, saying that "he'll might need it". Ironically, this was the same gun he used during his shootout against Char during the battle of A Baoa Qu.
By the events of Char's Counterattack, he completely overcomes his fear of space and lack of confidence in the fight against Char and Neo Zeon. He has strong hope in the growth of humanity, even when the future seems to be bleak and warped in politics, and through his will and the Nu Gundam's psychoframe, he averts the catastrophe of Axis falling on Earth.
Amuro has characteristics of a hot-blooded pilot in the first Gundam series. He is able to get away with this due to the advanced specs of the Gundam. In later series, where mobile suit technology has greatly progressed, his piloting appears to look more reckless and suicidal, but this is because his Newtype abilities and his piloting are so advanced, that he pushes his mobile suits to their limit. Amuro is also assumed to be pretty wealthy, as it is implied that he made plenty of money through the design and mass-production of newer Haro models.
Appearances In Super Robot Wars
Amuro appears in the majority of series either as his young, undeveloped One Year War age or as a respected veteran reflected upon Zeta and Char's Counterattack. The units initially piloted by Amuro are the typical agile real robot type units. Amuro will usually receive strong upgraded units by story or secrets that will make him a solid character throughout the game. Amuro has the ability to pilot just about any Universal Century Gundam unit with a few exceptions and excel due to his strong stat distribution, spirit commands, and pilot skills set as a real robot pilot.
Unit Appearances
Amuro will first sortie out in these units or will eventually receive them as an upgrade.

Alpha Timeline
Alpha
In this timeline, the One-Year War got delayed by the crash of the Macross on Earth. As a result of both this and his house arrest (From Zeta), he pilots the original Gundam (Or the G-3, if you get the secret) during the events of Zeta Gundam and ZZ Gundam and gets to fight the Zabis with the Nu Gundam, and possibly the Nu Gundam HWS. At one point, he gets transported to Byston Well with the Argama.
Alpha Gaiden
In Alpha Gaiden, he gets held captive by the Titans. However, the Preventers break them free. After beating the Titans and the Neo Granzon, the Preventers get catapulted into the future. Amuro becomes interested in Turn A's technology and Tifa's Newtype abilities. When asked about certain things from the past, Amuro and the others keep quiet. Eventually, they get revealed during the Dark History event. Suit-wise, he starts in the Nu, spends a mission or two in a Re-GZ before moving back, and the player is able to get the Nu HWS or the Hi-Nu.
Alpha 2
In Alpha 2, the events of Char's Counterattack occur mostly played straight. However, if the player does a few things, Amuro can ride in the Hi-Nu Gundam or Nu HWS.
Alpha 3
In Alpha 3, he experiences the events of Gundam Seed. In the GONG event, Char Aznable and Lalah appear as spirits and tell Amuro they are proud of Amuro for fighting for the people he cares about the most.
Advance Timeline
In this game, Amuro starts off in the Original Gundam and he gets to fight various villains with the Londo Bell and gets the Full-Armor Gundam and Nu Gundam as upgrades. Like in the novelization of Mobile Suit Gundam, Amuro Ray's Shadow-Mirror counterpart died in the Battle of A-Baoa-Qu.
Reversal Timeline
In this timeline, Raul/Fiona Gureden knows the Char's Counterattack version. After averting the Axis Colony Drop in one roure, Duminuss shows up and tries to obtain the Time Flow Engine. The Ra Cailum takes immense damage in the process, killing Amuro and the Ra Kailum crew in the process. However, Raul/Fiona Gureden gets sent back in time in the process. They encounter the Post-Zeta Gundam Amuro and the Gundam X crew. As a result, Amuro gets the Nu Gundam earlier than expected and the events of Char's Counterattack are averted.
Destiny Timeline
In this timeline, Char was successful in starting the Axis Colony Drop because the Organization of the Zodiac took over the Federation. However, Earth was sealed away by a mysterious force. Neo Zeon and Amuro investigate and end up fighting the Gishin Empire, Invaders, Zanscare Empire, Protodevlin and the Ruina in the process. He also finds out that Judou, Roux and Kamille were the only survivors from their respective groups.
GC/XO Timeline
GC/XO plays the One Year War perfectly straight, so you obtain Amuro early on with the attack on Side 7 at the same time as the start of Dragonar. Later, the Gundam can "combine" with the G-Fighter (Really just riding it like a surfboard), or Amuro can move into the G3 Gundam, powering up his comboattack with Kai and Hayato. Far later in the game, as the OYW becomes intermixed with the ZZ plot, the original Gundam can upgrade into the Full Armor Gundam and you can obtain the Re-GZ and the Nu Gundam - all of these are secrets, however.
Z Timeline
Z
In Super Robot Wars Z, this follows the movie incarnation of the Zeta Gundam timeline. However, Amuro gets the Nu Gundam during this game. When battling the Destroy Gundam, Amuro Ray advises the other characters on his side of ZEUTH that it should be fairly easy to immobilize due to its massive size, so it should be easy to avoid hitting the cockpit. Kira Yamato, being on the other side, doesn't get the memo, and kills Stella Louisser anyways (or seems to kill her: it turns out she survives if you meet certain requirements; otherwise, she dies). This is a possible Lampshade Hanging on what is one of Kira's worst decision in the series (as well as SRW's habit of showing how more experienced Amuro is compared to most other characters)
Z2 Hakai-Hen
Asakim spends the first half of Hakai-Hen trying to do to Crow what he did to Setsuko and Rand. Before he gets the chance, Amuro, who was just teleported to the Z2 universe shows up and shoots the Shuroga in the face, screwing over Asakim's plan to betray Crow right there. He joins OZ at the end of the game with Quatro.
Z2.2 Saisei-Hen
At one point in Saisei-Hen, Amuro becomes Ribbon's "guest" which is Ribbon's way of saying prisoner (if not a nicely treated one). He also gets special quotes with Ribbons when they fight.
